Custom metal profiles: how are they made?

Custom metal profiles are indispensable in numerous industrial sectors and can be used for a wide range of applications, from construction to the automotive industry, from furniture manufacturing to mobile walls. They can be made from various materials, such as stainless or carbon steel, aluminum, and copper, and can be tailored with specific features, thicknesses, and sections to best meet customer needs and adapt to precise usage contexts.

Metal Profiles: From Design to Production

The design and definition of the shape, or geometric profile, are the first steps in evaluating the product from a commercial perspective. For custom-designed profiles, which are not included in Profilsystem’s extensive catalog of standard profiles, an initial and quick feasibility analysis is required to ensure compatibility with the production capabilities of the facilities. Key factors for producing custom profiles include:

  • Shape: The required geometric design.
  • Order Quantity: Minimum order quantities depend on the complexity of the profiles, additional processing needs, and material type. For commercial or simple profiles, minimum quantities range from 30/40 QL (3000/4000 kg) and can go as low as 20 QL (2000 kg) for stainless steel profiles or 10 QL for aluminum. For custom profiles, minimum quantities are assessed during the quotation phase.
  • Customizations: Options such as lengths (450 mm to 13,000 mm), perforations at specific intervals, or identifying product markings (e.g., logos or serial numbers).
  • Material Quality: High-grade materials are selected based on the application.
  • Technical and Quality Requirements: Specific needs are analyzed and incorporated into the design process.

Once these factors are defined, Profilsystem proceeds with an accurate technical study to determine the costs of the tools required for the desired profiles. These costs are partially shared with the client, ensuring exclusive use of the tooling while safeguarding confidentiality, patents, or copyrights if necessary. The tooling created is an integral part of a composite system, combined with existing equipment, and is provided exclusively for authorized use, adhering to production schedules.

After the tooling has been designed and built, production of the custom profiles begins, following the client’s specifications precisely.
